What is NOT a requirement to become a certified pharmacy technician?

To become a certified pharmacy technician, certain criteria must be met, which typically include age, education, and successful completion of a certification exam. Among these, being at least 18 years old, having graduated from a pharmacy technician training program, and passing a board exam are standard requirements recognized in many states including Illinois.

However, having work experience in a pharmacy for at least 5 years is not a universal requirement for certification. While practical experience can undoubtedly benefit a pharmacy technician and may be preferred or required by certain employers, it is not foundational to the certification process itself. Therefore, this criterion does not count among the established requirements for certification as a pharmacy technician.
